Back in the 2000s, I used to update this devlog a LOT! I would put something up almost daily, just a small note on the progress of whatever project I was currently working on.
However, this blog gradually became just a news outlet for bigger announcements; at some point I felt like it was only worth posting something when there was a new version packaged and ready to appreciate. But last week I decided to go back to microblogging.

I think there were several reasons that led me to stop doing it on the first place; one of them was probably that, as I transitioned into my efforts to make commercial products, sometimes being too transparent on the daily struggles of the development didn’t feel very “professional” or that, in order to make it professional, a significant effort would have to go towards editing it- like I could no longer paste my raw thoughts, there had to be some usefulness behind them for other people, some polish as well. Some other times it could be argued that that could also go against the marketing efforts, talking too early about a product that wasn’t out already.
Some of these things still stand… I’m currently working on projects I shouldn’t disclose the progress on, and there are even things like the Magical Mirai Procon with their (weird) rules about being unable to share any details of what you are participating with, until the submission period is over.
But even so, I plan to blog. I think putting up short segments daily, even if not directly useful, is less of a burden than trying to assemble back the full story of the project to write bigger pieces (like for example, this one from last year’s), and makes it easier to see the evolution of the project, as each post represents a snapshot of uncertainty about the future.
So the plan to use private posts whenever it makes sense to, then maybe publish these when it can be done. Or not – I figured the main audience for this blog is mostly myself, but maybe in the future these collection of notes will be half as amazing as Jordan Mechner’s journals.

It’s been a bit over a week now, and I’m already enjoying it a lot and feeling again like slashie from the 2000s a bit. I have twelve Private posts already, mixed between the public ones from Berlin Interpretation 1992 (most of them are about my Magical Mirai Procon entry so are likely to be auto-disclosed when time comes).
Anyways, subscribe and don’t miss the fun 🙂
