Emerald Woods – Blueprints [0.4.8]

Emerald Woods is a survival and exploration game where you escape modern life to live alone in a mysterious, procedurally generated world filled with forests, lakes, caverns, and strange creatures. In this turn-based sandbox roguelike, combat isn’t the focus, but rather survival, creativity, and discovery: you can build shelters, farm food, tend animals, fish, craft tools and furniture, and explore abandoned buildings to uncover the secrets of the extinct Genco corporation scattered throughout the land. The game offers a chill experience with activities like cooking, painting with natural pigments, and navigating different seasons, encouraging players to choose their own playstyle each session.

The current version is available for free in “Earlier Access”, playable on browsers and downloadable for Windows at https://slash.itch.io/emerald-woods

This small version is more of a hotfix; it was reported that 0.4.7 had a packaging issue preventing the Windows version from triggering full screen or exiting to DOS. So it’s fixed now.

Moreover, I took the chance to release a change for template loading to be done from external resources; this is part of the efforts to create an external tool (for me, initially, but probably useful for modders in the future) to create new content for the game, as that’s coming up next in the roadmap (new abandoned lab locations with dangerous creatures).

Of course, this takes a little bit of “mystique” out of the game, as curious players will now be able to more easily check into the designed content directly without having to find it in the game itself. But I think it’s a matter of player’s choice in the end, and the advantages of being able to create more content more easily (and, as mentioned, potential tooling for modders in the future) should outweigh that.
