MMProcon26 – Day 1

Following the rules of the contest, this post will be kept private until after the submission period.

I decided to participate for the third year in a row in the Magical Mirai Programming Contest.

Earlier this week, I considered several ideas, one of them was Miku looking at the lake, manipulating sunflower petals with air gusts.

For now, I’m going to try to create an experience of being on a lakeside trip with Miku listening to vocaloid.

  • You are driving with Miku alongside lake Hamana, you make a stop to see the sunset while listening to one of the Magical Mirai 2026 songs (you can pick any from the stereo).
  • Miku taps her feet (or index finger?) to the rhythm of the song while the lyrics appear in the background sky and the scene comes to life.
  • The scene transitions from sunset to dusk for the duration of the song.
  • Miku is alive, she’s singing to the song and moving her head.
  • Tapping on rhythm makes Miku smile at you after the song and congratulate you.
  • One of the lightposts has a blinking light that seems like a glitch, but it’s actually a hint of the rhythm track.

I decided to use three.js, started right away using gemini-3-flash-preview. Some initial efforts where made to try to replicate a lakeside scene with full 3d geometry

Trying to place the individual elements was proving to be very challenging. I quickly figured out it would be a uphill battle.. what if I use an overlay instead? Keep the 3D scene for the lake but hand-draw the front?

Of course, this is just a placeholder acquired from Google Maps – the idea would be hand-drawn in anime style. Same for the scene of Miku inside the car (AI placeholder to get a sense of where things are going)

Then worked on adding an animation with the lighting and the filter applied to the overlay changing through the day

Also added some clouds, iterated a little bit trying to balance a realistic vs anime look.

Finally, added a track selection menu

Listening to some of the songs and thinking in advance on fun interactions, maybe at some point of the songs (like, the high energy points), Miku will draw out her gameboy and play some DDR-like minigame? hmm.
