Hospital Anomaly Tactics – Day 1

It’s time for roguetemple’s fortnight or, well, it’s been for over one week already.

My first idea to participate was kind of fuzzy; I imagined a traditional roguelike represented as a Muisca stone painting; I even implemented the foundations of it in Unity, and wondered a bit about how it should play. As I shared it with friend QuietGecko, he had some interesting ideas for a survival roguelike set in ancient Muisca times.

One week flew by tho, and I wasn’t able to get it off the ground due to my js13k entry, work, and a couple of other side projects; the more I thought about it, the more it seemed one week was just too little to rush it; it’s an idea that deserves some more time of development.

So, instead, I switched into another idea: a turn based game inspired heavily on the roblox game that’s eating my daughter’s attention these days. The time is running out, so it’s going to be a 7DRL.

The idea is this: You are in charge of the Animal Hospital, and your mission is to take care of them as they arrive to the front desk, guide them to the examination rooms and treat them… except, some of them are not animals but dreadful anomalies that will cause havoc in the hospital if you let them in.

So your mission here is to attend as many animals as possible, letting as few anomalies in as possible, and deal with the horrendous aftermath of your mistakes.

I decided to create the game from scratch using JSRL, only to discover it’s in such a bad shape – I’m not sure I’ll ever get to it, but I’ll love to devote some time to modernize it and inherit all the improvements from the likes of Emerald Woods.

Day 1 I was able to walk around the hospital and select how to examine incoming patients. Next up is:

  • Pathfinding and AI for them to go to their rooms
  • Mechanics to diagnose and heal patients.
  • Simple anomalies sneaking through and activating as hostile while waiting.
